A family that has shaped warōsoku by hand for generations.
Each candle is built up in translucent layers of plant wax, entirely by hand. You learn beside a maker who has spent a lifetime refining a craft most travellers never see.
At ISOBE Warosoku in Okazaki, Ryoji Isobe is the 15th custodian of a family craft that began around 1720. He was a 26-year-old salaryman in Tokyo when his father collapsed, and he came home to learn a craft passed on not through manuals but through the hands: layer after patient layer of plant wax, for three full days per candle.
